Iain Ballamy Bags £45,000 PrizeLeading British saxophonist Iain Ballamy is among eight artists and musicians to each be awarded a £45,000 prize from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The largest arts prize of its kind the sum is awarded over a three-year period, with recipients chosen for their “talent, promise, tenacity, perseverance as well as need and achievement.”

Iain Ballamy To Release New AlbumLeft field British saxophonist Iain Ballamy returns with More Jazz, his first new album in more than three years, released by Basho records on 18 June. Recorded with his group Anorak, featuring pianist Gareth Williams, bassist Orlando Le Fleming and drummer Martin France, the album finds Ballamy returning to his jazz roots, but with a difference. "I’m striving to create a bridge between jazz past and present” he says. “Re-invention is in the true tradition of jazz – the forward momentum that has always kept the music evolving and sounding ‘of its own time’.”

IAJE Goes Bust

IAJE Goes BustThe International Association for Jazz Education, based in the United States, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and closed the doors of its international offices. President Chuck Owen made a statement to IAJE members and supporters via e-mail announcing the dramatic news. IAJE will be turned over to a trustee with its assets to be distributed among creditors. Management failures, bad luck and unchecked growth have been blamed for its demise.
