Dave Douglas | Keystone

Dave Douglas | KeystoneThe centrepiece of this 2-disc package is Fatty Arbuckle’s 1915 silent film Fatty and Mabel Adrift, for which Douglas has produced a score. Excellently mastered for DVD, the music comes timed to the movie, and runs as a continuous 34-minute package, plus a bonus suite built around other Arbuckle vignettes. 07.04.06

Dave Holland Quintet - Critical Mass

Dave Holland Quintet - Critical Mass
Dare2984 221-6    ****
Robin Eubanks (tb), Chris Potter (ts, ss), Steve Nelson (vib), Dave Holland (b) and Nate Smith (d).  Rec. 2006

The more you listen to this record, the more you discover. Immediately accessible and approachable, the music may be nothing like the Modern Jazz Quartet but shares qualities in common: compositional values, fugue-like depth and integrity, thematic purpose and direction.

Diana Krall - Christmas Songs

Diana Krall - Christmas SongsVerve ****
Most of this album is freshly recorded, but there are two of the three tracks from the Christmas "single" CD Krall did back in 1998 (‘Jingle Bells’, also on that disc, has been re-made here with big-band accompaniment from the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra).
