Michael Brecker - Pilgrimage

Michael Brecker - PilgrimageEmarcy 172 6351 | ****
Michael Brecker (ts), Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau (p), Pat Metheny (g), John Patitucci (b) and Jack DeJohnette (d). Rec. 2006

Michael Brecker’s much anticipated valedictory album, completed literally days before his untimely death of leukaemia on 13 January this year, is a tribute to his remarkable musicianship. Never once betraying the parlous state of his health, from the complex, knotty theme of the opening ‘Wing and Prayer,’ to the final and title track, the saxophonist gives his all. Indeed, his solo on ‘Wing and a Prayer’ sounds positively exuberant.

Miles Davi - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 (Box Set)

Miles Davi - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 (Box Set)
Sony/BMG|093614|****
Miles Davis (t), Gary Bartz (as, ss), Keith Jarrett (el p, org), Michael Henderson (b), John McLaughlin (g), Jack DeJohnette (d) and Airto Moreira (perc, CDs 2, 6 only). Rec. 1970

This is the eighth Davis box set, and comes up to the remarkably high standards of the previous sets in terms of packaging (albeit no trade mark metal spine), liner notes (Bob Belden and Adam Holzman with additional essays by all the six sidemen above who played with Davis on these historic sessions) and the music, a good representation of dynamic, at times exciting and highly creative jazz-rock featuring Keith Jarrett on electric keyboards and Jack DeJohnette on drums. 03.02.06

Miles Davis|’Round About Midnight – The Legacy Edition

Miles Davis|’Round About Midnight – The Legacy EditionColumbia Legacy | 5199572 ****
Davis (t) with John Coltrane (ts), Red Garland (p), Paul Chambers (b), Philly Joe Jones (d) and on one track Thelonious Monk (p), Percy Heath (b), Connie Kay (d). Rec. 1955-56.

There are "historic reissues" and historic reissues. This one is historic. The reason? Well, although everything on disc one was contained in the fine Miles Davis-John Coltrane Columbia boxed set of a few years back, nothing from disc two has seen the light of day before. Not only that, but all bar one selection from disc two is not even listed in Miles discographies. Juicy enough? 22.07.05

Mina Agossi | Well You Needn't

Mina Agossi | Well You Needn't
Mina Agossi must be considered one of the music’s most compelling voices. On this, her second album for Candid, she demonstrates her singular ability of taking a cover and making it completely her own.
