Cutting Edge Dave Binney Quartet Set For Belfast Date

The Black Box in Belfast hosts saxophonist Dave Binney's Quartet on Sunday 11 May, as part of a short Irish tour, a rare sighting in the city for the Downtown-schooled American player.

Joined by “space age” keys player Craig Taborn, recently heard with Tim Berne at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, drummer Brian Blade whose new album Season Of Changes with his Fellowship band has just been released, and acclaimed bassist Scott Colley whose own disc, Architect of the Silent Moment, came out last year, Binney, who was born in Miami but grew up in southern California moved to New York as a teenager and made his debut in 1989, Point Game, for Owl. He’s best known to European audiences for his albums South and Balance on ACT.

Blood, Chet and Tears

One of the most highly regarded and acclaimed jazz documentaries of the last 20 years, Let’s Get Lost is set for a welcome cinema release next month. Directed by fashion photographer Bruce Weber, with stunning cinematography by Jeff Preiss, the 119-minute black and white film is a fascinating rise and fall story with Chet Baker (pictured) portrayed not long before he died ravaged and worn, cruising in an open top car reminiscing on his life. 07.05.08

A Change Is Gonna Come: Bill Frisell and Bobby Previte Debut New Bands at Cheltenham Jazz Festival

Flying in specially for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, which came to a close last night, the Everyman was the place to be for Bill Frisell’s new band on Sunday night in a special one-off show. While earlier, another leading American musician, drummer Bobby Previte, also unveiled his new band for the first time in Europe. 06.05.08

Courtney Pine Makes Debut At Ronnie’s As The Jazz Warriors Launch Album

Quite staggeringly tonight marks the debut of the UK’s leading jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine at Ronnie Scott’s in London, the first of two special nights at the club with the Jazz Warriors, when he launches their new album Afropeans. Speaking exclusively to Jazzwise, Courtney says: “I actually sat in with Elvin Jones there and got a European tour with him out of it. Art [Blakey] came backstage and told Elvin to take me on tour – Art had made up his mind about me when he sat in with the Jazz Warriors. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to headline at Ronnie’s ever!”
