June 2006 Jazz Instrument Update

Pearl folkloric elite congas
Percussionists will have noticed that Pearl has steadily been building up its range of hand percussion in recent years, with the new folkloric collection the latest addition. Mixing classic looks with modern innovation, the 28" tall oak congas are designed for the seated player, but are also pre-drilled for stand mounts. Thicker south American-style natural skins produce a warm sound, while a fibreglass gel coat to the interior seals the shell and adds to the projection and volume of the instruments. With four polished steel reinforcing bands set into the shells, the Tumbador, Quinto and Conga not only sound, but also look the business.

Elixir custom bass string shop
Those inventive string people at Elixir, who introduced the long life Nanoweb string coating, have clearly got their fingers on the pulse when it comes to looking after the needs of the electric bass player. Being able to customise a string setup to get the right feel and balance is essential to all bass players. It’s particularly so for those who reach out into the realms of the double bass and others who wish to raise their game to a high C. Using a standard four string foundation set, in gauges from super light to heavy, five- and six-string players can now customise their low Bs and high Cs. For five-string players, the choice ranges from the super light 125 through to the heavy 135. Six-stringers have the choice of the high C down to a medium 32.

Trevor James signature custom build saxes
Have you ever wished you could buy your perfect saxophone straight off the shelf? If so, your prayers are answered. The Trevor James company has produced the Signature Custom range, which allows the player to mix and match the individual sections of the saxophone to make up an ideal instrument. Choose from 925 silver, gold lacquer, rose brass, unlacquered and bronze for either the crook, body, bow or bell. Just imagine the possible tonal variations! Each and every part of these instruments is hand built in the company’s own workshops in deepest Kent. They all feature added quality components, such as a double braced low C and C sharp keys and extra adjustment screws and felts on the body under the tail arms. Competitively priced, each instrument comes supplied with a Hiscox moulded flight case.

LP compact conga back pack
After the runaway success of the LP compact conga, it was only a matter of time before LP would introduce the conga’s perfect travelling companion, the Lug-Edge compact conga back pack. This highly durable back pack made out of heavy duty nylon corduroy with strong metal hardware, not only holds two compact congas but will also carry two snare drum stands with a special compartment for percussion accessories. All together it’s everything you need to set up and play.

May 2008 Jazz Instrument UpdateWisemann FGL550 flugelhorn

If there were marks for quality of finish, this flugelhorn would be up there with the best of them. It also handles well and has a good balance. But although it’s good to see a well turned-out instrument, needless to say, I’m really more interested in the sound it produces and the quality of the various parts and fittings.
The supplied generic 7 mouthpiece is clean with a standard cup and no surprises. Playing the instrument produces a straightahead, brassy sound that is easy to control, but at the same time, not very subtle. There is no smokiness here. I even tried an alternative mouthpiece, but the 550 still produced the same sonic characteristics. Interestingly enough, driving the bottom end proved to be a real pleasure, as the 550 sailed through the lower register.

April 2008 Jazz Instrument UpdatePeerless Monarch KA guitar

The Peerless brand has been going from strength to strength since its instruments came on to the UK market just over a year ago. The Monarch, which is just one of the models in the jazz range, is a full 17-inch single cutaway and comes in all solid tonewoods with a rosewood fretboard, tailpiece and pick guard plus quality Grover machine heads. Originally available with just the standard Peerless floating pick up, it can now be purchased with a mellow voiced Kent Armstrong unit, hence the KA, which adds a whole new dimension to the dynamics of the instrument.

 March 2008 Jazz Instrument UpdateAkai EW1 - 4000S

The Akai EW1 4000S (pictured right) is an extraordinary piece of kit. An electric wind controller sound module, its fingering system incorporates touch sensitive note keys based on the same fingerings as those for the saxophone or clarinet, alongside its own idiosyncratic collection of plates, buttons and shift rollers. For instance, the octave shift rollers allow a player to shift pitch through an incredible eight octave range, while the adjacent glide plate gives a portamento effect, smoothly and continuously sliding the pitch up and down.
