Jimi Hendrix – His Final Interview: “Jazz, but not Jazz”

This month, 43 years ago on the morning of 18 September, Jimi Hendrix was found dead at The Hotel Samarkand in London’s Notting Hill.

The post-mortem concluded that he vomited in his sleep and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates. Much has already been written about where the legendary, game changing guitarist, composer and singer might have ventured next musically, notably his plans to record with Miles Davis. Roy Carr, then one of NME’s senior writers, caught up with Jimi at Ronnie Scott’s club to find out first hand about the proposed Miles and Gil Evans sessions and his recordings with Larry Young and John McLaughlin in what subsequently proved to be the final hours of his life. This was to be his last ever interview and is published here for the first time in full
