Edinburgh-born, London-based trumpeter Sean Gibbs drew some glowing reviews when he released his debut quintet album, When Can I See You Again?, in 2021.

An established member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, he is a keen composer of big band music, and Confluence – released on the enterprising independent Ubuntu Music, like that quintet album – is his opening foray in the field as a writer and band leader.

"The title [Confluence] refers to different aspects of my musical and personal life, which seemed to come together at the right time to make it happen," Gibbs explains. "It also represents the joyous gathering of so many incredible musicians and friends."

And indeed the 17-piece recording band join together to bring six Gibbs compositions to stirring, vigorous life. ‘Lyrical melodies, hearty grooves and a deep connection to the blues’ are Gibbs’ watchwords, and he honours those stated values throughout, from the urbane opener ‘Lewis’, through the sweet-toned ballad ‘Tomorrow Will Come’, to the warmly burnished comedown closer ‘Hungover Moments Of Clarity’, which features some spectacular blowing from all concerned.

A fine follow-up statement of intent from a rising talent.
