Jazz breaking news: Royal Albert Hall To Kick Off New Jazz Series

Monday, March 29, 2010

Starting in May, the Royal Albert Hall will begin a Late Night Jazz Series in the recently refurbished Elgar Room, playing host to evenings of jazz, swing, cabaret and Brazilian rhythm.

Young UK crooner Alex Stewart begins the series on 6 May, followed by the Alex Hutton Trio (Wednesday 26 May) and UK violinist Ben Holder’s trio featuring Israeli guitarist Bar Zazel (Wednesday 2 June). British vocalist and Nina Simone devotee Gill Manly is there on Wednesday 16 June while Parry Ray on Thursday 1 July will sing a mix of standards and reinterpreted pop songs and then Brazilian singer and guitarist Gustavo Marques will bring his trio’s Afro-Brazilian rhythms to the Elgar Room on Wednesday 14 July.

The Elgar Room, which was home to the Central School of Speech and Drama until the 1950s, was renovated in 2009 as a performance space and restaurant. The series aims to bring a new audience to the Royal Albert Hall, and will cultivate a supper-club atmosphere, with table service and a food menu. Doors will open at 9pm, with sets beginning at 10pm.
