Multi-award-winning saxophonist Emma Rawicz leads her band (comprised of pianist Ivo Neame, guitarist Ant Law, bassist Conor Chaplin and drummer Jamie Murray) to present her inimitable fusion sound, melding jazz-rock, funk and even Indo-jazz grooves with hard hitting riffs and Michael Brecker-ish solo flights.

Rawicz has made a big splash on the UK and European jazz scenes in a relatively short time, impressing critics and winning fans with her stunning technique and powerful delivery. In April 2023 she signed to major European Jazz label ACT and released her second album, Chroma in the summer. More projects are in the works such as her new duo with pianist Gwilym Simcock and she regularly appears with Frank Zappa-inspired London group, The Lovers of Invention. Her star is most definitely on the rise on the Continent too, with this south coast date snuck in between a 19-date European tour.

14 corto.alto

Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1

Fresh from winning ‘Best Live Band’ at the Scottish Jazz Awards in December this is a great opportunity to catch this exciting multi-faceted band outside of festival season. Fronted by the versatile trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall, corto.alto have (like several Scottish bands) a melting pot of sounds and styles – as well as showing off such gifted young players as explosively energetic saxophonist Harry Weir, piano phenomenon Fergus McCreadie and their beat-maestro, drummer Graham Costello. Setting themselves some challenging virtuosic passages (such as the fiendish melody on ‘Not For Now’) the band also possess that overlooked quality – a wry sense of humour – that always ensures audiences leave with tunes in the head and a smile on their face.

The Sheldonian Theatre, Broad Street, Oxford

Mammal Hands (saxophonist Jordan Smart, pianist Nick Smart and drummer and tabla player Jesse Barrett) are known for their heady mix of jazz, electronica, classical, world and folk music. Here they perform in the round to play tracks from their entrancing fifth album, Gift from the Trees (Gondwana Records).

Formed in Norwich in 2012, the trio have marked out their own space and sound, fusing jazz improv with hypnotic interlocking rhythms, frequently exploring poignant melodic themes. Each member contributes equally to the writing process, creating a forceful group dynamic, ably demonstrated via their mesmerizing live shows and heady recordings.
