6-7 Evan Parker at 80

Cafe Oto, 18-22 Ashwin Street, London E8

A special two-day 80th birthday residency with Brit jazz saxophone colossus Evan Parker, whose debut album, The Topography of the Lungs (Incus) with Derek Bailey and Han Bennink, was released in 1970 and he’s barely slowed down since with an astonishing and huge discography across a vast number of collaborations with everyone from Barry Guy and Dave Holland to Roscoe Michell, Michael Nyman and Squarepusher. He’s well-known for his group work as well as his solo performances with his inquisitive attitude toward techniques such as multiphonics, overblowing, circular breathing continuing to push the technical boundaries of the saxophone – rightly earning him critical acclaim and much respect from his peers. Across the weekend, Parker is joined by the likes of Barry Guy, John Edwards, Mark Sanders and more to celebrate this milestone birthday.

8 The Necks

Peggy's Skylight, 3 George Street, Nottingham
Australian cult heroes The Necks are comprised of pianist Chris Abrahams, drummer Tony Buck and bassist Lloyd Swanton. Together they have released 18 albums over 36 years. Here they play this intimate Nottingham venue for the first time across two completely improvised sets. Expect ambient jazz and hypnotic minimalism from this jazz trio – which is unlike any other you may have heard. They improvise and respond to the audience and environment they play in – making it a truly unique gig experience. This long-form improv group come highly recommended (they’ll be at Cafe Oto for a four-day residency this month too (1-4 April).
