Neil Cowley Trio and Sons of Kemet head up Canary Wharf Jazz Fest

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

The ninth edition of the free entry Canary Wharf Jazz Festival is set to take place from 14 to 16 August in the heart of the City of London with a diverse line up of jazz, latin and Afrobeat artists.

The opening Friday night kicks off with newly formed jazz-funk band The Rawness who feature scorching Bristol-based guitarist Alex Hutchings and edgy funk saxophonist James Morton. They appear ahead of double-drum/tuba/sax crew Sons of Kemet who top the bill with their heady blend of Afro-centric psyche-tinged trance-jazz.

Saturday’s programme begins from 3.15pm with up-and-coming pianist Peter Edwards Trio, hard-boppers The Filthy Six and divine soul-jazz diva Eska, with barnstorming latin-jazz percussionist Edwin Sanz headlining with his Salsa Orchestra featuring pianist Alex Wilson. Sunday 16 August features an equally dynamic mix of sounds with superb young trumpeter Yazz Ahmed getting things underway with her Family Hafla band from 1.30pm, followed by drummer Dylan Howe’s acclaimed Subterrraneans’ David Bowie-inspired set. Afrobeat-ska-dub group The Fontanelles take things into the evening, while the Neil Cowley Trio close things out with their high-energy take on progressive acoustic jazz.
