Charles Lloyd - In Full Bloom

As one of the few remaining living legends of jazz, saxophonist Charles Lloyd is still exploring the musical continuum that he began in the 1960s, where genres melt away and his sound and soul reach out beyond musical borders.

Celebrating his 80th birthday earlier this year, he's just released his second album from his guitar-led group The Marvels with Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz's string-augmented atmospherics to the fore, plus, this time around, singer Lucinda Williams giving voice to Lloyd's melodies. Stuart Nicholson spoke to the saxophonist about the deep country and blues roots at the heart of his music and his numerous and surprising encounters with Elvis and The Beach Boys
