Pat Metheny has been at the very top of global jazz guitar summit ever since his epochal 1976 debut, Bright Size Life, which he recorded aged just 21.

Yet as remarkable as his playing has always been, it’s also his distinctive sonic universe that’s brought potency and meaning to his music. Taking these concepts into new dimensions today with his super-charged five-piece Unity Group, which now includes dazzling multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi as well as saxophonist of the moment Chris Potter, he spoke to Stuart Nicholson on why it’s not enough to just be fluent in the language of jazz today, but to develop an original context in which to have something to say is the ultimate goal
