Wednesday, September 14, 2022

Help Musicians open applications for its prestigious Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, offering financial support towards a musical activity and business advice to a jazz musician or band at a tipping point in their career.

Now in its 32nd year, the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award is awarded to a musician who can demonstrate their creativity and ambition to build a career within the jazz scene. Previous winners include Soweto Kinch, Errollyn Wallen, Xhosa Cole and Roller Trio.

One musician will receive £5,000 in financial support that can be used to fund a range of activities including recording, filming, touring and mentoring, as well as one-to-one business advice tailored to their needs and delivered via experienced music industry professionals.

An additional £5,000 is distributed between two Development Awards for musicians who demonstrate the potential to make an impact in the jazz scene. Musicians who receive the Development Award will also benefit from half a day of business advice each.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an artist development day at Strongroom Studios in London on Wednesday 16 November. This will involve an opportunity to perform in front of a panel of jazz experts as well the chance to receive an hour 1:1 business development session with an industry expert. There will also be a ‘Get to know Help Musicians’ session with a member of our Engagement Team. An optional session with a performance anxiety specialist will also be offered to those wanting to receive advice on this topic prior to their performance, over zoom.
