Pianist Tom Cawley’s group Curios, which features bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Josh Blackmore and which last week won the best band award at the BBC Jazz Awards, release new album Closer on 1 September. Cawley, who first came to prominence with Acoustic Ladyland, with whom he continues to play, as well as high profile dates with the Charlie Watts Tentet, will release the album on his own newly launched record label, Impure Music, that will be distributed in the UK by Proper Distribution.
The new album, which follow’s the band’s debut release Hidden released in February 2007, features new original material that Cawley describes as “melodic, romantic, fiery and serene, with a greater range of timbre than before.” The new material has been worked up over recent live gigs and the recorded tracks are segued to best capture the live feel and group improvisation. In the pipeline for future release on Impure Music is a piano duet album with Kit Downes from Empirical and an electronic project in currently in initial stages. Cawley has also launched a website www.impuremusic.com where free downloads are available as well as tasters for Closer. Curios play the Brecon Jazz Festival on 8 August, Pizza Express Jazz Club on 10 September and Scarborough Jazz Festival on 27 September.
