A new three-part series of long-lost interviews, The Lost Tapes, starts on Jazz FM on Sunday 25 July at 9pm hosted by popular presenter Helen Mayhew. The three hour-long programmes feature interviews with drummer Art Blakey, pianist Oscar Peterson and singer Sarah Vaughan originally recorded when they toured the UK in the late 1950s/early1960s by journalist Les Tomkins, who wrote for Melody Maker, Jazz News and Crescendo. The interview tapes were bequeathed to the National Jazz Archive by Tomkins, who died in 2020, as part of a library of recordings and the NJA has partnered with Jazz FM for the series.

“These interviews give us a chance to hear the voices of some of the greatest names in jazz, providing a unique insight into their own music and lives” says Helen Mayhew. “Oscar Peterson, Art Blakey and Sarah Vaughan are all hugely important and influential figures in the music, and all have great stories to tell.”

The Lost Tapes with Helen Mayhew is broadcast on Sunday 25 July 9-10pm (Art Blakey); 1 August 9-10pm (Oscar Peterson) and 8 August 9-10pm (Sarah Vaughan).
