Hugh Masekela Concert With LSO And Jason Yarde

Friday, November 2, 2007

One of South Africa’s most iconic musicians and his country’s best known jazz musician, trumpeter Hugh Masekela will play a very special concert in collaboration with the LSO on Wednesday 28 November at 7.30pm. Adding to the uniqueness of this concert is the score by saxophonist, composer and producer (notably of Gwilym Simcock’s debut album) Jason Yarde. Entitled All Souls Seek Joy the piece will receive its world premiere representing Yarde’s most high profile work to date.

A key member of the F-ire Collective Yarde’s profile has been building to the culmination of his involvement with the LSO Discovery Panufnik Young Composers Scheme. Conducted by François-Xavier Roth, the LSO will be joined by Hugh Masekela, Jason Yarde, backing vocalists and the LSO St Luke’s Community Choir.

An iconic figure in today's South African culture Masekela remains a compelling live performer whose sublimely warm flugelhorn works ion wonderful contrast to his emotionally charged, rasping vocals, conveying his continued passion as a voice for his country’s people and their long struggle towards freedom and unity.

In addition to the concert there’s a unique opportunity to take part in the LSO Discovery Video Conferences that give students around the world the opportunity to join in a conversation with renowned musicians. On 26 November, you can sit in the studio and join the discussion, as Hugh Masekela and Jason Yarde talk live and interactive with nine UK and USA universities via a video link from LSO St Luke’s, the UBS and LSO Music Education Centre, Old Street.

Although entry is free and it is essential to book tickets via the Barbican Box Office on 020 7638 8891.
