Thursday, January 23, 2014
The Cockpit Theatre’s monthly jazz programme, Jazz In The Round, kicks off another year with a triple bill featuring Cleveland Watkiss (pictured) with support from Steve Beresford and NYJO Nonet on Monday 27 January.

The series is now in its third year and is held on the last Monday of every month at the venue situated in Marylebone, London and has become known for its diverse programming that always includes a wide range of jazz artists. Leading British vocalist Cleveland Watkiss headlines on Monday night with a special solo performance drawing from his vast musical career and virtuosity. The a capella project features improvisation using real-time looping to create vibrant vocal soundscapes and compositions.
Experimental musician Steve Beresford, who has worked with musicians such as Evan Parker and John Zorn, plays in support with a special performance on the Cockpit piano incorporating electronics. Also appearing are the National Youth Jazz Orchestra Nonet – a nine-piece ensemble made up of past and present members of the top UK jazz orchestra here led by talented saxophonist Tom Stone as they perform music in celebration of Miles Davis’ 1964 Philharmonic Hall concert, as featured on the classic album My Funny Valentine. In between the performances DJs Jez Nelson, Chris Phillips and Alex Watson will be playing a few tunes on vinyl in the bar.
