Joe Lovano And Stan Tracey For Belfast

Wednesday, September 27, 2006

The Belfast festival at Queen’s has announced its jazz programme. One special highlight this year is the appearance of saxophonist Joe Lovano’s Nonet playing new orchestrations of Miles Davis’ Birth Of The Cool commissioned by the Monterey jazz festival and the commission was written for the group by Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz composer and arranger Gunther Schuller, who performed on the original Birth of the Cool sessions.

The festival, running from 19 October-4 November, is set to present a wide range of music. It includes local composer, the maverick, Brian Irvine and his Ensemble (20 and Saturday 21 October, Spiegeltent), the Stan Tracey Quartet featuring Bobby Wellins (21 October, Elmwood Hall), Cachaito López, “Guajiro” Mirabal, Manuel Galbán, ‘Aguaje’ Ramos (Buena Vista Social Club) (22 October, Whitla Hall), K’naan (24 October, Spiegeltent), the Joe Lovano Nonet (28 October, Elmwood Hall) and the Tord Gustavsen Trio (1 November, Elmwood Hall).
