Julian Lage, Holland/Scofield matinee shows announced and Jazz Voice line-up revealed as EFG London Jazz Festival draws nearer

The full programme has been announced for this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, which runs from Friday 12 to Sunday 21 November, with shows taking place across the capital’s concert halls, jazz venues and free stages

Among the latest additions to the programme is the line-up of guest vocalists for the opening-night gala Jazz Voice (12 Nov, Royal Festival Hall) which will include Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Aynur, Ego Ella May, Georgia Cécile, and Sachal Vasandani with a special appearance by US alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin who will also perform some spoken word pieces during the concert, with more guests to be confirmed soon. This show is part of the EFG Elements Series, which also includes concerts by the stellar of duo Dave Holland & John Scofield (14 Nov, Cadogan Hall) that now has an extra 4pm matinee show due to demand for tickets;and Tomorrow’s Warriors' sumptuous celebration of the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On from the Nu Civilisation Orchestra (18 Nov, Queen Elizabeth Hall) and the high-energy pairing of Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and African kora master Seckou Keita (19 Nov, QEH).

There are extra shows too from Blue Note-signed guitarist Julian Lage, who performs music from his latest album Squint at both 4pm and 7pm (12 Nov, Cadogan Hall), while fellow six-stringer Shirley Tetteh, known for her strikingly melodic and rhythmic playing with the likes of Nérija and Maisha, will play a rare solo set opening for Archie Shepp and Jason Moran (12 Nov, Barbican).

Further additions include 20-piece Afro Cuban ensemble the New Regency Orchestra (NRO) explore fresh takes on the music of Machito, Tito Puente and Chico O’Farrill (12 Nov, EartH); award-winning singer Cherise Adams-Burnett (13 Nov, Ninety-One Living Room); a new freeflowing trio from Idris Rahman (saxophone), Leon Brichard (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums) combine as Wildflower (19 Nov, Space 289); while saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi performs a new immersive film installation with longtime collaborator, visual artist Anne Verheij (19 Nov, Kings Place), and the 11-piece Levitation Orchestra lift-off with their barnstorming blend of spiritual jazz, classical, electronica, soul, spoken word, M-Base with trumpeter Axel Kaner-Lidstrom leading the charge (19 Nov, Studio 9294).

And MOBO-winning, Mercury Prize nominated pianist Zoe Rahman performs a special concert with her Trio (of drummer Gene Calderazzo and bassist Alec Dankworth) at Frith Manor Primary School (6.30pm, 21 Nov) who were the winners of Jamie Cullum's Yamaha Grand Piano (worth £65,000) last year. Rahman wrote a song for her local primary school which helped them win the piano – and for her LJF performance she will unveil some brand new compositions. These concerts join those already announced by Jazzwise, who are festival media partners.
