The fiery groove-led septet are gearing up for a busy year

London-based seven-piece KOKOROKO have been mining their infectious Afro-beat inspired groove-jazz since 2014 but haven’t enjoyed the same plaudits as fellow ‘new jazz’ groups Nérija and SEED Ensemble.

Yet, they’ve built a sizeable live fanbase through constant touring, while their melancholic song ‘Abusey Junction’ (which featured on the breakthrough We Out Here compilation, see a live version below) has racked-up an impressive 33million views on YouTube. All this precedes their seven-date UK tour in early 2020, which kicks off with a headline show at the iconic Roundhouse, Camden.

Featuring rising trumpeter Sheila Maurice Grey, saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi and guitarist Oscar Jerome among its talented line-up, the band’s debut album is scheduled for March next year on the Brownswood imprint.

Dates are: The Roundhouse, London (28 Jan); Trinity Centre, Bristol (29 Jan); Gorilla, Leeds (30 Jan); The Wardrobe, Leeds (1 Feb); St Luke’s, Glasgow (2 Feb); Concord 2, Brighton (4 Feb) and Rescue Rooms, Nottingham (5 Feb).
