Maisha celebrate the Alice Coltrane Songbook at Church Of Sound

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

The spiritual jazz legacy of Alice Coltrane is set for a sonic celebration by fast-rising London-based sextet Maisha, who perform her works and their own original compositions over two sets on 1 June at Church Of Sound, at East London's St James the Great church.

Maisha draw on ecstatic modal grooves, transcendental melodies and powerful extended solos and feature a number of emerging names including saxophonist/flautist Nubya Garcia, guitarist Shirley Tetteh, keyboardist Amané Suganami, double bassist Twm Dylan, drummer Jake Long and fiery drummer/percussionist Tim Doyle.

With the recent release of Alice's compelling ashram tapes, The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (Luaka Bop), and the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane's death in July, there's renewed interest in the Coltrane legacy, which is being embraced and explored anew by the current crop of jazz musicians.
