Soweto Kinch Wins MOBO But Parts From Record Label

Friday, February 28, 2003

Alto saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch won the best jazz act award at last night's MOBO awards after the category's reinstatement this year. This was his second award in a matter of days following his success at the British Jazz Awards the night before.

But in a surprise move it was also announced by his record company Dune that Kinch and the label would part company following the delayed release of A Life in the Day of B19: Basement Fables, the follow up to last year's Tales of the Tower Block. No reasons have been given for his departure but Kinch has written extensively about his frustration at the hold up in releasing his upcoming album. In a statement Dune records commented: "Dune Music would also like to announce that by mutual agreement, A Life in the Day of B19: Basement Fables will be their final Soweto Kinch release. Soweto Kinch is widely regarded as a singular voice within the British and global jazz scenes and Dune Music are very pleased to have played a significant role in guiding him towards this point in his career. They wish him the very best of luck in the future."
