The eagerly anticipated new album from the Armenian piano star is set for release in August

Armenian piano ace Tigran Hamasyan is set to release what could be his most seismic album to date, when The Call Within is issued on 28 August on Nonesuch. His fourth recording on the label, following the solo piano album An Ancient Observer (2017) and its sister EP, For Gymuri (2018), The Call Within continues where his electrifying prog-jazz outings Shadow Theatre (2013) and Mockroot (2015), left off.

Produced by the pianist, the 10-track LP features his new trio of NYC bass star Evan Marien and award-winning Swiss-born drummer Arthur Hnatek. Mixing up powerful polyrhythmic odd-meter grooves and recast Armenian folk themes, the album’s guests include progressive metal guitar hero Tosin Abasi (from Animals As Leaders), on the coruscating ‘Vortex’, which contrasts with the fragile lyricism of ‘Our Film’, with vocalist Areni Agbabian and cellist Artyom Manukyan. Blurring real and imaginary worlds Hamasyan explores a dizzying array of subjects from cartography to poetry, Christian and pre-Christian Armenian folk stories and legends, astrology, geometry and cinematography.
