December brings a new live recording from much-admired saxophonist and improvisor Paul Dunmall, with Soultime Again featuring his quintet (Percy Pursglove, Glen Leach, Dave Kane & Miles Levin) alongside the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Big Band, and arrangements of Dunmall’s original material by Ed Puddick.

An exciting opening to 2024 sees the captivating duo of saxophonist Trish Clowes join long-term collaborator pianist Ross Stanley for their new album Journey to Where, releasing on International Women’s Day to coincide with their performance at Wigmore Hall (where the music was also recorded) for a wide-ranging celebration of women in music as both composers and performers. These also include singers Clare Wheeler, Liz Swain, Tara Minton and Jo Lawry all of whom combine on songs by women composers including 'Do You Play’ and 'Decently Ripped' by Clowes, 'Awakening' by Nikki Iles and 'Skin' by Geri Allen.

The duo theme continues later into spring, with the release of new music from pianist Rebecca Nash and vocalist Sara Colman and their Ribbons project, which debuted live at last year’s Manchester Jazz Festival. This collection of new works and arrangements celebrates the joy of musical partnership, friendship and collaboration, and features a stellar line-up of guests, with trumpeter Percy Pursglove, saxophonists Trish Clowes and Ian Ballamy, bassists Chris Mapp and Henrik Jensen, and Ruth Hammond on bass clarinet.

Acclaimed young saxophonist Xhosa Cole releases his third album on Stoney Lane in the spring – the music of Thelonious Monk recorded live during a 38-date UK tour, with Cole's band featuring NYC tap dancer Liberty Styles and vocalist Heidi Vogel. Cole uses Monk’s phrases, motifs and melodies to find new ways through these compositions with a charismatic ensemble that brings together the bebop and post-bop worlds.

Closing the first half of 2024, pianist and organist David Ferris presents his dynamic septet and beguiling original writing with his new release, Sketches, with the eminent New York-based guitarist Peter Bernstein guesting on the recording.

Stoney Lane Records, who also produce the festival record store and live in-store sessions at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, will also shortly be announcing the opening of their Stoney Lane Live series in Birmingham, supported by Arts Council England, featuring visiting international artists crossing the jazz, flamenco, Indian, Eastern European and Arabic music worlds, with new commissions, recordings and collaborations with label artists.
