Trumpeter Jay Phelps signs to Ubuntu Music and shares ‘Everyone’s Ethnic’ Video

Fiery Canadian trumpeter sets up solo career with twin digital album releases and new single 'Everyone's Ethnic'

Jay Phelps, the Canadian-born UK-resident trumpeter, has signed to London-based label Ubuntu Music for a multi-album deal, which kicks off with the digital release of his two contrasting albums SoulEndvr and Chaos or Commerce, both available from 25 October.

A constant presence on the capital’s jazz scene since arriving from his native Vancouver in 1999, Phelps’ versatile virtuosity has seen him tour and record with a long list of musical luminaries such as Courtney Pine, Andrew Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Brown, John Hendricks, George Benson, Jamie Cullum, Sir John Dankworth, Amy Winehouse, Jazz Jamaica, Soweto Kinch, Skatroniks, Ska David Murray and Liv Warfield among many others.

Now focusing on his solo career SoulEndvr features leading contemporary names from the UK jazz scenes with contributions from Rick Simpson, Mark Lewandowski, Shane Forbes, Rachel Cohen and Ruben Fox, while Chaos or Commerce features New York-based stars such as saxophonist David Binney, pianist John Escreet and drummer Nasheet Waits.

With further releases are planned on Ubuntu, Phelps has shared the video for the track ‘Everyone’s Ethnic’, which is taken from his SoulEndvr album – see the video below.
