The multi-instrumentalist gears up for a marathon recording session

Jonny Mansfield may have come to wider attention as a virtuoso vibes player with his band Elftet’s debut album on Edition Records in 2019, yet Mansfield is a multi-instrumentalist and plans to utilise the full range of his talents to write and record an album in a day. Following in the high-flying footsteps of bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding – who did a marathon non-stop three-day writing/recording session with her Exposure project in 2017 – Mansfield will begin his daylong attempt early on the morning of Thursday 6 August.

Describing the slightly daunting task he’s set himself, Mansfield said: “I'm going to be getting up really, really early, composing all the music (each track with a different compositional process), recording all the instruments, mixing and mastering the audio then releasing the album at midnight on Bandcamp.”

The idea itself came from a jazz workshop he was hosting: “I was saying to the students - 'the success of being a musician is not about winning the awards or getting the great reviews, it's the process of creating and connecting with people, which results in developing your process.' After the class, I was thinking how I could put my words into actions and 'album in a day' came to mind.”

The live stream will be available on Jonny Mansfield’s Facebook, YouTube and Instagram pages on 6 August
