Video of the Day: Jay Phelps shares new single ‘Rise’ from Broken Standards Vol.2
Friday, May 23, 2025
The leading UK-based trumpeter is back with a fresh, Afrobeat-influenced take on a classic 1979 Herb Alpert tune

Originally a No.1 song in 1979 by trumpet legend Herb Alpert and the instrumental sample behind the Notorious B.I.G. hit 'Hypnotize', top UK trumpeter Jay Phelps has added a modern Afrobeat spin for his version of 'Rise'. This includes a preacher style vocal by Ghanaian master musician Afla Sackey (Raz & Afla), with simmering guitar riffs and bass grooves performed by rising star Tom Ford (Chris Dave, Reuben James).
Jay's trumpet soars across this anthem where he adds his own personal flare, allowing the listener to be enveloped by his effortless and breathy tone while grooving to his beat production.
The track is taken from Broken Standards Vol 2, the second instalment of Phelps’ series giving jazz standards a 21st century makeover while simultaneously shinning a light on the global breakdown of social and economic standards. Also a DJ, Phelps has taken his favourite genres to spin such as Afrobeat, Amapiano, Baile Funk, Broken beat, Neo Soul, Trip-hop and worked them into this exciting genre-hopping project.
