Trumpeter Matthew Halsall returns with his eagerly anticipated new album An Ever Changing View, which is released on 8 September on his own Gondwana Records imprint. The album comes just ahead of his biggest solo show to date when he headlines the Royal Albert Hall on 21 September, which is part of his nationwide UK tour.

An Ever Changing View finds Halsall at his most experimental yet, expanding his sound and production techniques to create richly detailed, immersive and deeply meditative music. While working on the music Halsall stayed in both a beautiful architect’s house with breath-taking sea views in north Wales and a striking modernist house in Bridlington, in the northeast of England. These locations coalesced in the music which he describes as “like a landscape painting”. In these new environments, Halsall wanted to capture “the feeling of openness and escapism” and to approach making music again from scratch. “I hit the reset button and wanted to have complete musical freedom,” he says. “It was a real exploration of sound.” And from early listens, the album creates a fine balance between cinematic studio production and spontaneous interactions from the band.

And while Halsall is well known for his hypnotic spiritual jazz albums such as Fletcher Moss Park, When The World Was One, Into Forever and Salute to the Sun, his live shows can be explosive affairs with his long-form pieces driven to new heights, such as his incendiary performance at the 2022 Love Supreme Jazz Festival that drew several thousand fans.

His touring band includes Matt Cliffe (saxophone & flute), Alice Roberts (harp), Jasper Green (piano), Gavin Barras (bass), Alan Taylor (drums) and Sam Bell (percussion) with special guest, flute/sax-man of the moment, Chip Wickham.

See Halsall and band on tour at the following dates: Glasgow Jazz Festival (17 Jun); Wylam Brewery Tap, Newcastle-upon-tyne (13 Sept); Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds (14 Sept); Metronome, Nottingham (15 Sept); New Century Hall, Manchester (16 Sept); Royal Albert Hall, London (21 Sept); Arts Centre, Norwich (22 Sept); Upper Chapel, Sheffield (23 Sept); The Parish, Huddersfield (30 Sept); Hare & Hounds, Birmingham (5 Oct); The Goods Shed, Stroud (6 Oct); Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury (7 Oct); Phoenix, Exeter (9 Oct) and St George's Bristol, Bristol (10 Oct).
