Composer Paul Mottram is set to release his ambitious orchestral jazz project The Seven Ages of Man on 6 October on Ubuntu Music. A large-scale 70-minute suite scored for jazz sextet and string orchestra, Seven Ages… weaves jazz improvisation and grooves within a tight thematically developed classical structure. Conceptually drawing from medieval art and literature, the piece forms a personal reflection on the stages of a single human life cycle, as the press information states: “taking cues from Shakespeare’s description of life in terms of characters from a play: Infant, Schoolboy, Lover, Soldier, Judge, Pantaloon and the Second Childhood of Old Age.”

Written specifically for the high-level multi-reed virtuosity of Tim Garland (a longstanding friend of Mottram’s - pictured above), who is the principal soloist, the recording also features pianist Jason Rebello, vibist Jonny Mansfield, drummer Ralph Salmins, double bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado and percussionist Paul Clarvis.

Mottram, a classically trained violinist, pianist and composer who studied at the Royal College of Music, Cambridge University and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama is best known as a hugely successful orchestrator/composer whose long and illustrious CV includes music for the likes of Doctor Who, The Crown, Oscar-winning film Blue Jasmine as well as hundreds of TV shows, films and radio programmes.
