Saxophonist and composer Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio, whose triumvirate of talents also include former Pat Metheny pianist Gwilym Simcock and top-notch drummer/percussionist Asaf Sirkis, all feature on their new double album, Moment of Departure, released on 3 May via Ubuntu Music.

The album is split between a first half focusing on the trio’s powerful improvisational abilities on brand new compositions that seamlessly integrate the Britten Sinfonia’s strings. The second half showcases Garland’s prowess as a composer, arranger and conductor with the ensemble joined by leading violinist Thomas Gould, and UK trumpet star Yazz Ahmed as a special guest on the track ‘Sub Vita’.

Commenting on this hugely ambitious project, Garland said: “That Moment of Departure, from the known, the notated, towards something new is a shout of fearless freedom. The compositions on this album all have crucial and varied relationships with improvised music, from string orchestra to intimate trio, and completely free-form music. Classical influences and visual art have informed me, as much as my jazz heart.”
