The talented South London based singer releases her debut single recorded live at The Vortex with BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year winner on piano
Jazz vocalist and composer Rowan Flack released her original composition 'The Calling' as her debut single across all streaming platforms on Friday 15 April 2022.
Accompanied by fellow Trinity Laban Jazz alumnus and 2020 BBC Young Jazz Musician, pianist Deschanel Gordon, their performance was filmed at The Vortex Jazz Club, Dalston. Her debut EP of original music will be released in 2023 following a series of singles featuring her band of established jazz musicians from the London scene. Rowan is currently collaborating with musicians and writers in small sessions, curating the final songs for the co-written EP release.
Flack describes the inspiration for the song as “the desire to break free, from the traditional jazz standard structure, moving into a more expansive space”. The song features lyrics inspired by poetry, with its unexpected twists a metaphor for leaps of the imagination. Flack’s warm, mellow tone is balanced by a hint of melancholy, which finds her voice complemented by Gordon’s simpatico accompaniment.
