Known for exploring a wide range of music and influences – from rock and singer-songwriter styles through to jazz and musical experimentation – drummer/percussionist Will Glaser returns with a new album that pushes the boundaries of composition and improvisation.

Climbing in Circles is the culmination of a three-year project, with Glaser’s longtime collaborators saxophonist Matthew Herd and pianist Liam Noble in their bass-less trio/duo settings. The album follows two duo releases that feature the same compositions, augmented with one extra tune and free improvisations as a way of attempting to more clearly show the difference personality can make on the music.

Climbing in Circles Part 1 with Herd and Climbing in Circles Part 2 with Noble. Glaser chose to depart from the same repertoire as recorded previously for the trio album, choosing new tunes that better represent the musical growth of these partnerships – some standard repertoire, a Tom Waits song, a Paul Motian tune and a Don Cherry composition.

“I guess this record sums up everything I love about music. We play standards and compositions from my heroes, and spontaneously create new music in the moment,” explains Glaser. “I really feel I can be myself with Liam and Matt. We are all drawing from this large bag of great music we all love and so nothing is really off the cards. When we play the tunes it’s with this very open mindset of seeing what will happen. It always feels really open and new things surprise me every time. When we play free, they come out like miniature compositions.”
