German baritone saxophonist/singer Kira Linn has been announced as the first female artist to be selected for Whirlwind Recordings’ 'Step Forward, Reach Back' one-year programme to support emergent female talent, across all ages, on their roster. Linn is set to release her new album, Illusion, on 7 April 2023 on the label, with her new single, ‘That Thing’, out tomorrow – which you can listen to below.

Commenting on her music Linn said: “The album reflects emotions and thoughts that arose in a time of loneliness, silence and uncertainty. During this period, I learned to enjoy the deceleration, and set out to discover and try out new things.” Linn has released two albums with her sextet, Linntett, which features herself on baritone sax, bass clarinet and vocals with Christopher Kunz (tenor/soprano sax); Nino Wenger (alto sax/alto flute/flute); Lukas Großmann (piano, Rhodes, synth); Lukas Keller (electric bass) and Johannes Koch (drums). For this latest release they explore neo-soul and electronic sounds alongside jazz with Linn adding vocals for the first time to the mix.

The new single describes the search for that certain something that seems to be lost: the spark, the enthusiasm, the twinkle in the eye. This feeling is also reflected in her melancholy expression on the cover, while the green colour world surrounding her stands for hope. As a novelty, Kira Linn sings for the first time in one of her tracks - unexcited and thoughtful, but also hauntingly between neo-soul and jazz.
