Jazz breaking news: Countdown To Edinburgh Jazz Festival

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Not long now to the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, which kicks off on Friday and runs through until 31 July.

Headliners of the festival this year, one of the UK’s oldest, include Courtney Pine, James Carter, Trombone Shorty, the Magnum Öström Band and Tommy Smith.

The festival dates back to the late-1970s when it was basically a trad jazz festival but through time has evolved into an eclectically based jazz and blues event. Produced by Fiona Alexander and Roger Spence, the festival is one of Scotland’s major jazz gatherings and acts as a prologue to the Edinburgh International Festival following shortly on in August.

Highlights of the programme include: Leroy Jones Quintet (22 July, Spiegeltent), Courtney Pine (22, Queen’s Hall), Soul Rebels (22, Spiegeltent), Jacob Karlzon Trio (23, The Hub), James Carter Organ Trio (23, Dans Paleis), Mario Caribe Jazz Bossa (23, The Hub), Ken Peplowski and Alan Barnes (24 Spiegeltent), Gwyneth Herbert (24, Dans Paleis), Trombone Shorty (24, Queen’s Hall), Magnum Öström Band (24, The Hub), Rene Marie (25, Dans Paleis), Evan Christopher (26, Royal Overseas League), Niki King (26, Queen’s Hall), Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (26, Spiegeltent), Joe Louis Walker (28, Spiegeltent), Martin Taylor (28, The Hub), Martin Kershaw Quartet (29, Bosco Theatre), Jack Bruce (29, Queen’s Hall), James Hunter (30, Jamhouse), Brian Kellock Trio (30, The Hub), Curtis Stigers (31, Queen’s Hall) and Neil Cowley Trio (31, Spiegeltent). – Stephen Graham
