Jazz breaking news: Marlborough Jazz Festival Kicks Off This Weekend
Monday, July 11, 2011
This weekend sees Marlborough host its annual jazz festival in the picturesque rural north-east of Wiltshire.
The historic market town becomes a vibrant and lively centre showcasing musical talent from around the world, and this year the Marlborough fest is celebrating its 25th anniversary in style. Bands range from big names to young groups and rising stars.
Friday’s highlights include saxophonist YolanDa Brown, twice winner of the MOBO Award for the best jazz act. Referencing jazz, reggae, salsa and R&B in her music, Brown has developed her own unique sound honed by toured with the likes of The Temptations and Courtney Pine. Also appearing on Friday is The Filthy Six, bringing you horn-led, organ-fuelled soul jazz/funk and boogaloo, perfect if you’re aching to put your dancing shoes on. The renowned Darius Brubeck Quartet bring their talents to the festival on Saturday, while those looking for a slick and entertaining selection of happy traditional jazz should head for Pete Allen’s Traditional Jazz Band, also playing on Saturday and featuring drummer John Petters.
Undoubtedly one of Marlborough’s highlights will be Clare Teal and her Trio, performing on Sunday. Having been on a steady road of success since her debut album in 2001, Teal won British Jazz Vocalist in 2005 and BBC Jazz Vocalist of the year in 2006 and has presented Big Band Special on Radio 2. She will be joined at Marlborough by bassist Simon Little, who is familiar with playing alongside big names such as Jamie Cullum and Pee Wee Ellis, as well as Grant Windsor (piano) and Ben Reynolds (drums).
Come along this weekend and enjoy a friendly and relaxed festival, presenting a huge range of musical talent at a variety of venues, from local pubs to the fire station. Marlborough Jazz has made their unique stroller tickets available again this year, allowing holders entry to nearly every show. – Louise Jones
