Jazz breaking news: Randy Brecker and Bill Evans’ Soulbop with MMW and Terence Blanchard Band for Barbican Double Bill

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

One of the highlights of Barbican’s upcoming month-long Blaze festival looks set to be the unique collaboration between powerhouse fusion horn men Randy Brecker and Bill Evans and funky avant garde Hammond trio Medeski, Martin and Wood, taking place on Thursday 7 July.

Brecker and Evans’ long running Soulbop band has consistently found groove-laden common ground between all-out fusion, funk, R&B and latterly bluegrass but the presence of MMW should stretch things into grungy Downtown and jam band territory. Adding further weight to this bill will be an opening set from acclaimed New Orleans trumpeter Terence Blanchard, one of the big hits at last year’s London Jazz Festival, who’ll get things underway with his hard-hitting brand of melodic post-bop.
