Now in its seventh year, the following nine young musicians have made it to a special mentoring weekend of workshops and advice on working in the jazz sector, culminating in a showcase concert. The semi-finalists for 2013 include a high percentage of drummers, and are: Euan Leslie, drums (age 14, pictured), Fergus McCreadie, drums (age 15), Magnus Pickering, trumpet (age 17), Finlay Jamieson, drums (age 17), Helena Kay, saxophone (age 19), Sean Gibbs, trumpet (age 19), Brodie Jarvie, double bass (age 22), Mark Scobbie, drums (age 22) and Corrie Dick, drums (age 22).

Five of the above semi-finalists will be chosen to progress to the final, to be held at the Aberdeen International Youth Music Festival on the 31 July. The winner will receive £1000 in cash and a further £1000 towards a demo recording. They will also take part in a six-venue tour of Scotland in 2014, as well as performances on BBC Radio Scotland and the London and Glasgow Jazz Festivals in 2014.
