These state-of-the-art studio monitors should inspire creativity and offer high-end sound in a portable package
Small is often described as beautiful, but in recent times the phenomenon of ‘shrinkflation’ has meant getting less product for the same, or more, money… not so pretty. Well, in the case of these small, cute (rather than beautiful), portable speakers from globally-renowned monitor brand KRK, they not only punch well above their weight for sound and looks but come in at a reasonable RRP of around £329 from some online stores.
With so much music made and listened to on headphones these days, KRK’s concept of creating portable studio quality monitors kicks against this trend with a smart but practical design that should encourage communal music-making no end. This tiny but mightily impressive package is KRK’s first all-in-one portable speaker system and offers a wide range of connectivity options with TRS Jack, RCA, Aux and USB inputs, as well as Bluetooth pairing. The four-inch woven glass aramid woofers deliver a really dynamic sound with plenty of detail, but minus any harshness in the high-end and for speakers so petite, there’s a respectable amount of body and bass to the sound too thanks to the built-in ABS cabinets, while the one-inch soft textile tweeters provide crystal-clear treble.
High and low frequency EQ controls are on the master speaker as well as an automatic room correction feature that can be used with the built-in measurement microphone. This speaker also has a headphone monitoring Aux jack that automatically turns off the GoAux speakers when in use.
Setting up is simplicity itself as power is supplied to both monitors by a single AC cable. The right monitor acts as the ‘master speaker’ for the pair, with all the inputs, controls, and the amplifier on the back, with the left one powered by a speaker-level cable.
Topping all this off is the bespoke nylon carry case, which snugly houses the two adjustable monitor stands – which can easily be collapsed and tucked behind the speakers – and with two mesh sidepockets for the power lead and AC connecting lead. The bag also sports a sturdy top handle for carrying everything with ease – into your temporary studio, rehearsal room or outdoor recording space.
