Review: MXR Clone Looper Pedal

The Clone Looper is the perfect practice companion, sound sculpting or solo performance tool and it’s small enough to slot onto the smallest of pedal boards

This deceptively simple-looking loop pedal is that perfect blend of no-nonsense tough tank-like metallic outer shell and smart inner workings, so typical of MXR’s innovative stomp boxes.

Loopers are increasingly ubiquitous, from the new breed of highly exotic models such as the Chase Bliss Mood or Montreal Assembly’s Count To Five cult classic, to the ever-reliable TC Electronic Ditto series, there’s plenty of to choose from. Thus the Clone Looper combines the best of both worlds with clear-toned functionality and a six-minute loop time, while allowing room for some envelop-busting experimentation. In operation it’s simple enough to set up a loop by tapping the ‘Rec’ button, and then pressing the ‘Play/Pause’ button for playback.

But the secret weapon here is the central volume control which also allows the user to engage half or double-speed modes and a nifty reverse loop function. This is made possible by pressing the volume knob down once for half-speed (which can sound very low indeed!), or a double tap for double speed – which creates a wild cartoon-esque version up an octave – while pressing and holding the volume for a couple of seconds engages reverse mode, with ensuing alien/psychedelic sounds. The best bit of all this is that looped parts can be reversed or set at double speed, while further overdubs can be performed in ‘normal’ time/pitch and within seconds you’re creating some otherworldly sounds with complex layers and textures.

The Clone Looper is the perfect practice companion, sound sculpting or solo performance tool and it’s small enough to slot onto the smallest of pedal boards. Players of all levels will enjoy the Clone Looper’s fun and inspiring form and functionality.
