Jazz Breaking News: Big Band Britannia Brings The Barbican To Life

Aided by the narration of Geoffrey Smith, Big Band Britannia took its audience from the early days of Anglo-American big band jazz, with arrangements from the likes of Spike Hughes and Benny Goodman, to the works of contemporary arrangers Stan Tracey, Neil Ardley, and Sir John Dankworth.

After Still Waters and Fringe Magnetic, two trumpet-led groups that offered respectively an unsentimental and likeable amalgam of show tunes and original material courtesy of Henry Lowther, and widescreen Schoenberg-meets-Bukowski experimenting led by Rory Simmons, Saturday night/Sunday morning at the Vortex in London, during the Jazz At Lincoln Center residency, saw the last of the three jam sessions organised to complement the concert hall programming.

The Wigan Jazz Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary next month with a broadly based mainstream jazz programme from 10-17 July featuring big draws the Monty Alexander Trio, Curtis Stigers, Chris Barber, Stan Tracey Big Band and Bobby Shew guesting with the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra directed by Ian Darrington.
