“On this album I wanted to play less than ever before,” says Polish violin virtuoso Adam Baédych. By which he means to convey no lack of enthusiasm for his instrument or the project, just a desire to play fewer notes and make each one count more and ‘have its own story’. And on the evidence of this lovely classical/jazz chamber recording, violin virtuosity clearly doesn't always have to equate to speed; the title track, written by Baldych, is a gorgeous opener, economical in expression but nonetheless full of feeling. The trio, formed on the eve of the Sounds of Europe Festival in Breda in 2018 at which they made their debut, brings together Baldych, Dutch pianist Rogier Telderman and French cellist Vincent Courtois in a spirit of European egalitarianism and mutual admiration – each contributes to the writing, and Telderman also serves as producer. An added dimension is provided when Baldych switches to Renaissance violin, a downtuned modern instrument with gut strings and, as Baldych says, amazing sustain, on ‘Interlude’ and ‘In Love in Hanoi’. A charming, deeply contemplative album.
