London-born saxophonist Alex Hitchcock is only six years out of the Royal Academy of Music's jazz course, but he's already a big presence on the British scene as both an astonishingly quickthinking virtuoso, and an increasingly creative bandleader/composer.

Same Moon in the Same World is an ambitious lockdown-generated venture, on which the uncanny contrapuntal partnership of Hitchcock and innovative guitarist Ant Law is hooked up remotely to a glitterati of international A-listers - including American vibraphonist-of-the-moment Joel Ross, Pat Metheny/Dave Douglas bassist Linda May Han Oh, and four drummers including Eric Harland and Jeff Ballard. Given the surfeit of possible combinations, this fine set's lyricism and coherence is a triumph. Hitchcock's bright folksy-postbop theme over Law's guitar hook and Harland's hard-pressing drums open up ‘Outliers'’ tricky 11/8 pulse, and hard on its heels the funky ‘Haven't Meta Yet’ with its insistent short-motif melody and swooping Law solo keeps the energy buzzing.

Israeli piano star Shai Maestro and Danish double-bass powerhouse Jasper Høiby bring their mix of subtlety and weight to the softly Avishai Cohen-like ‘Low Glow’, and the dreamily swaying ‘Vivid’ draws an exquisite slow-burn vibes solo from Ross, and wordless vocals and a typically shapely and understated bass break from Linda May Han Oh. The only cover, Hitchcock's tender account of John Coltrane's ‘After The Rain’, makes for a telling finale. There'll never be a substitute for live in-person international touring, but this classy virtual collaboration comes pretty close.
