Andreas Varady made his breakthrough at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2012, when Quincy Jones signed him to his management company. He was then 14. The following year he recorded Andreas Varady for Verve Records, but it was not until he came under the wing of Resonance that he felt his work as an artist was properly represented. Varady is a committed jazz musician, and The Quest is the first instalment in showing the world what he can really do. What emerges is a young musician of astonishing maturity and virtuosity, as his solo on the opening track ‘Lost Memories’ reveals. A kind of overture that previews the stylistic breadth of his talent, it quickly becomes apparent that a gift such as Varady's is very rare in jazz and is of the magnitude that prompts encores and standing ovations. Indeed, on the uptempo ‘Radiska’ it makes you want to burst out in applause yourself when it's over. On more reflective tracks tracks, such as ‘Patience’ and ‘Story’, he reveals a strong sense of melodicism indicative of a maturity that speaks of artistic integrity. Though not quite his maiden voyage on disc – it's his third album – it represents a new beginning on the Resonance label by a musician who seems destined to go far in the world of jazz.
