Trumpeter Navarro and drummer Holmes have been playing together since they were both students at the New England Conservatory. It was while performing as a duo at a protest organised by Musicians Against Police Brutality in New York in 2015 that they met the other three members of what quickly became the critically acclaimed free-jazz quintet Irreversible Entanglements. Here, they take time out from that larger ensemble and return to their roots, with a follow up to their self-released 2014 debut. At the heart of their musical dialogue sits a big, brash free-jazz crash, with Holmes bashing out a snare-cracking fusillade draped in Navarro's high, piercing trumpet peals, billowing in luxuriant echo-reverb and with a gleaming, brassy lyricism that hints at his Latin American heritage. To this seething template, they add various electronic textures, acid thumps and squelching bass lines, while contributions from various guests further extend the palette – soulful vocals from Brigitte Zozula, swirling piano from Nick Sanders and so on. The album comes across as something of a grab bag, slamming together various studio jams, but the rambunctious telepathy enjoyed by drums and trumpet supply just enough focus to pull it together.
