There's a whiff of the old-fashioned ‘supergroup’ about this project – albeit from a distinctly underground perspective. Æthenor teams stalwart UK-improv drummer Steve Noble with Stephen O'Malley of the bone-crushingly heavy US doom-ambient group Sunn O))) and two members of Norwegian black-metal barbarians Ulver. But, rather than the sonic blitzkrieg you might expect, this debut of live recordings is a deeply atmospheric collection of gloomy, ominously looming soundscapes that seem to hang, suspended and curiously static, like swollen rain clouds. Most of the time, it's virtually impossible to tell what combination of instruments is generating the murk – until O'Malley lets a few watery guitar notes trickle out, with the same air of mythic melancholy as Led Zeppelin's ‘No Quarter.’ But Noble's both the engine and the rudder, dropping precise bursts of energy at just the right point to steer it out of the doldrums. It's what Supersilent might sound like if they decided to slap on the eyeliner and patchouli and become Goths for the weekend.
