This hardworking trio – celebrating its 10th year as an active entity – teams the Norwegian powerhouse drummer Nilssen-Love with a couple of Chicagoan stalwarts who aren't afraid to let rip. All three have worked with Peter Brötzmann, and you'd be forgiven for expecting this live set, recorded in Moscow, to be a relentless scorch-out. Certainly, after a jerky, slightly tentative start, there is a fiercely boiling energy to much of it, with reedsman Rempis needing little encouragement in accessing a spraying, altissimo super-skronk, goaded along by Nilssen-Love's punchy patterns. But, that's not the whole story. During the 37-minute improvisation that constitutes most of the album, the music ebbs and flows, alighting in a number of unexpected locales – thanks in no small part to cellist Lonberg-Holm's restless creativity. At times, he scrapes and shrieks like a blood-spattered Psycho shower scene; at others, he hums dreamily like a cloud of drowsy bees; at others still, he instils a granite-grey austerity that calls forth an almost classical feel from the trio. But don't fret, firepower fans, the two much shorter encores are ferocious enough to rip your face off. Twice.
