Magda Giannikou is a Greek-born multi-instrumentalist with a vast imagination and a synaesthetic approach to composition, with ideas and sound experienced through colour. And born out of courage: though physically created in New York by an ensemble of musicians from elsewhere, the multilingual songs on this third album reflect the pain of a crisis-ridden Greece, the importance of overcoming fears and, on the likes of the vivacious ‘Ase Me Na Bo’, how much fun it must be to write for and conduct a nine-piece string orchestra. Lead single ‘Coracao’ is a ridiculously catchy slice of samba that sees vibes and harp zinging alongside guitars, drums and Giannikou's rich, easy voice. There's lightness here, too: the ballad ‘Thiamandi’ is all ethereal loveliness, and ‘Tam Tam’ is admirably restrained. But it's madcap tunes such as ‘Tigre Malin’, a colour-burst of fanging guitars and honking brass, on which Banda Magda shine the brightest. Unapologetic fun.
