Breathe out, ahhh, and relax. The princess of Brazilian bossa is back with her first solo album in five years, and what a predictably lovely, wafty, end-of-summer tonic it is. Thirty years in the biz she may be but Gilberto sounds as ageless as ever, singing of dreams and flying and love and lonely hearts in a voice as lilting as a flower fairy's. From the exquisite, self-penned opener ‘Somewhere Else’, a delight of strings, piano and seagull samples, sung in English and Portuguese, to Brazilian standards including Antônio Carlos Jobim's ‘Vivo Sohando’ – performed in 1963 by Stan Getz and Bebel's late father João Gilberto – the lady never falters. Her confidence is almost palpable, buoyed by a band that includes Brazilian Girls pianist Didi Gutman and revered LA multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and underscored by six original songs that hold their own alongside as many covers. Stand outs include a tinkling electro-samba reading of ‘Tout Est Bleu’, in French; ‘Novas Ideias’, a zippy duet with cool-as Brazilian crooner Seu Jorge; and a swoonsome take on Neil Young's ‘Harvest Moon’. Lush.
