Back in 2000, James’ reputation covered so many bases that he was the headliner at Jazz FM's 10th birthday party, but the party itself was probably more memorable than the music.

Despite some engaging and even enterprising work in the past, James is now in his 80s and clearly capitalising on his role in spreading the virus known as smooth jazz. The excitement promised by the album title is sorely lacking, and the concept of ‘live’ refers merely to recording – so we are told – without either overdubs or editing, while simultaneously filming the whole project for Blu-ray (your reviewer was spared the visuals). It's very much a greatest-hits outing, including ‘Westchester Lady’, ‘Angela’ (think Taxi!) and ‘Mister Magic’, plus other people's anthems such as ‘Downtown’ and even ‘Rocket Man’. Palazollo is a highly proficient young bassist with relatively little space to shine while Kilson, that brilliant drummer who came to attention with Dave Holland and others, is mostly confined to playing gentle off-beats.
