Despite the rambunctious energy of Auger’s various line ups, live was where it was at for the Hammond man’s bands. And never more so than with the Oblivion Express. Well, we say Hammond man – Auger’s early heroes were the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith – but these re-issues regally drip with Fender Rhodes piano. Which is no surprise, given that by the early 1970s Auger was in the thrall of Herbie Hancock in his jazz-funk, Headhunters mode. So, revel in an epic take on ‘Maiden Voyage’ which captures all that makes the Express such fun: unfettered, fiery and crackling with energy. Okay, it’s hardly subtle, but Hancock himself remained appreciative of Auger’s efforts. Other compulsory faves include a roogalating ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’, a show-stopping ‘Inner City Blues’ and the perennial ‘Bumpin’ on Sunset’. Of course, the vinyl versions only add to that sense of nostalgia where it seemed all forms of music could vitally feed into each other.
